The Boulder Junction Public Library welcomes the public to view their January/February “Art in the Library” exhibit of quilts from Luella Doss.
The art is on display during regular library hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 10 am to 1 pm; and Tuesday and Thursday 10 am to 6 pm.
Luella Doss is renowned as an internationally celebrated fiber artist who has built a career from her lauded art quilts, life-like soft sculpture and astounding tribal wearable art creations.
Backed by a Bachelor of Science in occupational therapy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ms. Doss commenced her career by spearheading her own business, Luella Doss Designs, in 1973. She continues to excel with the company today, though she has taken on parallel roles over the years. From 1974 until 2013, she worked as a director with Christmas in the Country and as a designer with Simplicity. In 2000, she became the curator, as well as a board member for the Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts, where she remained until 2015. Civically, Ms. Doss has served as the President of the Friends of Boulder Junction Public Library and as the chairman of the Christian Education Committee at the Community Church of Boulder Junction.
Ms. Doss has additionally found success as a writer for the introduction of the publication, “Stories in the Stitches.” In light of her accomplishments, she earned an Academy Award from the American Fabric Counsel, as well as honorably named the Wisconsin Gallery Artist of 1995. Looking back on her career, she attributes her success to her passion and dedication to her work. She feels fortunate to have been able to build a career in a field that she admires, which is why she has never taken it for granted. In the future, Ms. Doss looks forward to continuing to work while also traveling the world and highlighting the enormous benefits that wool fabric has had on humanity.
Doss has four quilts on display in the library that she has designed and made. Above the children’s computers is the quilt “Orbs with Castle Keep.” All fabrics in this quilt are from the “EyesWise” fabric collection designed by Doss for Free Spirit Fabrics, NYC with technical assistance from Bobbie Fleming. Above the photocopier is the quilt “Poultry in Motion.” All fabrics in this quilt are from the “Fowl Play Made from Scratch” fabric collection designed by Doss for Free Spirit Fabrics, NYC. In the Reading Room is the quilt “Tree of Life.” All fabrics in this quilt are from the “Hot Flash” fabric collection designed by Doss for Free Spirit Fabrics, NYC with technical assistance from Andrea Schuster. Also in the Reading Room is the quilt “Jungle Fever with Elephants.” All fabrics in this quilt are from the “Jungle Fever” fabric collection designed by Doss for Free Spirit Fabrics, North Carolina.
