Ice Age Trail Hike

Sat, Apr 30, 2022 10:00am | US/Central

Location: Veterans Memorial Park/Jack Lake

Description:

This spring hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Langlade County is organized by the Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter is open to the public.  Interested persons and groups should meet 10 a. m. near the county forest historical marker at Veterans Memorial Park.

Participants are encouraged to wear suitable clothing and bring a lunch or snack. Hikers can individually hike the Ice Age Trail with dogs on leash but the chapter requests that no one bring their pets, leashed or otherwise, on the group outing.

The spring hike will be a five-mile round trip from the county park on the Summit Moraine Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail to Narrow-Neck Lake. The segment is the newest of the five Ice Age Trail segments in Langlade County which was re-routed over four days in 2018 by a crew of local and statewide volunteers.  The segment includes views of a large glacial lake which filled in with sediment since the massive ice sheet that covered two-thirds of the state melted away over 11,000 years ago.

The Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter is one of twenty-one volunteer groups affiliated with the Ice Age Trail Alliance based at Cross Plains to develop, maintain and promote the national scenic trail wholly within the state. The North Country National Scenic Trail between North Dakota and New York passes through less than 200 miles in Wisconsin.

The Ice Age Trail was added to the national system of scenic trails with the passage of federal legislation in 1980. Currently there are eleven trails designated as national scenic trails to provide long distance hiking opportunities.

Additional information on the hike, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and volunteer opportunities with the Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter can be obtained by mail to 622 First Avenue, Antigo or by calling 715-623-2645.
