Rural Virtual Academy had the highest enrollment among Taylor County schools, welcoming 1,197 students during the 2024-25 academic year, according to a report from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2024-25 school year, 52.8% identified themselves as girls, and 47.2% as boys.

Data also showed that most of the students were white, accounting for 83.2% of the Rural Virtual Academy's total enrollment.

Among the 11 schools in Taylor County, Medford High School ranked second in enrollment numbers with 667 students, while Medford Elementary School welcomed 587 students and ranked third in the 2024-25 school year.

Rural Virtual Academy is a part of the Medford Area Public School District, which roughly covers schools within Taylor County with its main office in Medford.

In the previous school year, Rural Virtual Academy also had the highest number of students among Taylor County schools.

In 2022, the teacher-to-student ratio was approximately 1:14 in Wisconsin classrooms, compared to the national average of 1:16.

Wisconsin ranks 22nd in the U.S. for public education spending, with an annual expenditure of over $16,500 per pupil, totaling $13.8 billion.
