CITY OF MEDFORD: Community Discussion Addressing Rent Burden on December 15

Rentb

City of Medford recently issued the following announcement

Event: Community Discussion Addressing Rent Burden

When: December 15, 2020

Time: 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Medford residents are invited to attend a virtual public forum hosted by the Medford Planning Department at 6 PM on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 to learn about recent efforts to address housing affordability and provide input on potential solutions to help address "rent burden" in Medford.

The first portion of the meeting will include presentations on the current state of housing; local trends and statistics; the City's work to update the Medford Housing Needs Analysis and Housing Production Strategies; and recent efforts to address housing development in Medford.

The second portion of the meeting will be reserved for community members to ask questions and provide input on potential solutions to ease rent burden in our community.

Rent burden is defined by looking at the percentage of a household's income spent on housing costs. If the amount paid is more than 30 percent of the income, a household is considered rent burdened. Paying more than 50 percent is considered severely rent burdened. Paying too much for housing often prevents households from paying for other necessary expenses, including medical care, food, utilities, education, transportation, child care and more!

Over 30 percent of Medford's renter households are paying more than 50 percent of their income to cover the cost of their rent.

Feedback from this community discussion will be used to help guide City housing initiatives to address this challenge and will be shared with the Oregon Housing and Community Services Department, as directed under HB 4006.
